Cancer preventative, inhibitory and curative treatments can function in a variety of ways. Many act in more than one manner. Sometimes the process is unknown. Not infrequently, it is uncertain. When putting together a treatment regimen, it makes sense to choose the best from each of the relevant categories. The various categories are indicated below (in brackets). No attempt has been made in this index to indicate the degree of supporting data, which is greater in some instances than others.

AA Anti-angiogenesis agents

Angiogenesis is the formation of blood vessels to a cancer, required for tumour growth above about 2mm. Arresting angiogenesis is a way to inhibit tumour growth.

IB Inhibitors of the binding of cancer cells to blood vessels walls

In order for cancer cells circulating in the blood to form a metastasis at a secondary site, they must first bind to blood vessel walls at that site. Inhibition of this binding

IC Inhibitors of the clumping together of cancer cells

IG Selective inhibitors of glucose metabolism in cancer cells

Unlike normal cell function, cancer cells get their energy by metabolizing glucose anaerobically. Anything that inhibits their ability to metabolize glucose can lead to their death.

IP Inhibitors of cancer cell proliferation, and thus tumour growth

Substances that specifically prevent the further proliferation of cancer cells, by whatever means, known or unknown, are clearly useful.

IS Immuno-stimulants

Potential cancer cells regularly form in a normal healthy body. These are generally dealt with by natural processes, such as substances in the diet or by the body's own immune system. Cancers can therefore form when the immune system fails to do its job properly. Substances that boost the performance of the immune system can therefore help reduce the risk of cancers, and can fight an existing cancer.

Necrosis is unnatural cell death in which the body has to deal with the elements of the dead cell as best it can. It is contrasted with apoptosis (natural or programmed cell death). Anything which selectively destroys cancer cells is clearly of potential use in the fight against cancer although the necrotic tissue can cause toxicity, and needs to be successfully eliminated.
