Categorized Index of Treatment Options

Categories

Cancer preventative, inhibitory and curative treatments can function in a variety of ways. Many act in more than one manner. Sometimes the process is unknown. Not infrequently, it is uncertain. When putting together a treatment regimen, it makes sense to choose the best from each of the relevant categories. The various categories are indicated below (in brackets). No attempt has been made in this index to indicate the degree of supporting data, which is greater in some instances than others.

Treatment Options by Category

AA Anti-angiogenesis agents

Angiogenesis is the formation of blood vessels to a cancer, required for tumour growth above about 2mm. Arresting angiogenesis is a way to inhibit tumour growth.

Anti-angiogenesis Agents (AA)

Bovine Cartilage (AA)

Carctol (AA, UP)

AI Apoptosis inducers

Apoptosis, also called programmed cell death, is the natural way in which a cell dies. Cell components are deconstructed in an orderly manner. Contrasted with necrosis.

Alstonine (AI, DR, ST)
Antineoplastons (AI, ST)

Burzynski's Antineoplastons (AI, ST)

Diet (AO, AI, CD, IS, MM)

AL Alkalinizing agents

According to some cancer theories, cancer cells thrive in an acidic environment. Creating an alkaline environment therefore helps to cause their destruction by apoptosis or necrosis.

Caesium Chloride– High pH Therapy (AL, UP)

AO Antioxidants

Antioxidants mop up free radicals that can otherwise cause DNA damage and hence cancer.

Antioxidants (AO)

Cat's Claw (AO, IS)
Chlorella (AO, CD)
Curcumin (AI, AO)

Diet (AO, AI, CD, IS, MM)

EcoGen (AO, IG)

BE Blockers of the energy supply to cancer cells

If the energy supply to cancer cells can be selectively shut down, they will automatically have a tendency to die, either by apoptosis or necrosis.

Graviola (BE, IP)

CD Carcinogen detoxifiers

Some foods contains substances that are able to help detoxify otherwise harmful carcinogens.

Chlorella (AO, CD)

Diet (AO, AI, CD, IS, MM)

DR DNA repairers

Cancer is characterized by cells with damaged DNA. Some herbs and foods contain substances that can repair this damage.

Alstonine (AI, DR, ST)

Flavopereirine (AI, DR)
EP Enhancers of cell proliferation

Substances that enhance the proliferation of normal cells will likewise enhance the growth of tumours.

GS Gene signalling modulators

Cancers can be caused by disruption to the natural signalling that takes place between cells. Some natural substances seem able to regulate this signalling in a beneficial manner.

Dietary Fibre (AA, GS)

Green Tea (AA, AI, AO, GS, IP, IS)

Sodium Butyrate (AA, GS)

IB Inhibitors of the binding of cancer cells to blood vessels walls

In order for cancer cells circulating in the blood to form a metastasis at a secondary site, they must first bind to blood vessel walls at that site. Inhibition of this binding
can therefore help prevent the formation of a metastasis.

Cimetidine (Tagamet) (IB)

IC Inhibitors of the clumping together of cancer cells

In order for cancer cells circulating in the blood to form a metastasis at a secondary site, they must first meet up and clump together at that site. Inhibition of this clumping can help prevent the formation of a metastasis.

IG Selective inhibitors of glucose metabolism in cancer cells

Unlike normal cell function, cancer cells get their energy by metabolizing glucose anaerobically. Anything that inhibits their ability to metabolize glucose can lead to their death.

IP Inhibitors of cancer cell proliferation, and thus tumour growth

Substances that specifically prevent the further proliferation of cancer cells, by whatever means, known or unknown, are clearly useful.

Careseng (IP)
CLA (IP)
Conjugated Linoleic Acid (IP)

EcoGen (AO, IG)
IS Immuno-stimulants

Potential cancer cells regularly form in a normal healthy body. These are generally dealt with by natural processes, such as substances in the diet or by the body's own immune system. Cancers can therefore form when the immune system fails to do its job properly. Substances that boost the performance of the immune system can therefore help reduce the risk of cancers, and can fight an existing cancer.

Aloe Vera (IS)
NI Necrosis inducers

Necrosis is unnatural cell death in which the body has to deal with the elements of the dead cell as best it can. It is contrasted with apoptosis (natural or programmed cell death). Anything which selectively destroys cancer cells is clearly of potential use in the fight against cancer although the necrotic tissue can cause toxicity, and needs to be successfully eliminated.

Amygdalin (NI)

Holt Radiowave Therapy (IG, NI)

MM Multiple miscellaneous actions

Many therapeutic options have a multiplicity of actions, which may not be definable in terms of conventional medicine.

Acupuncture (MM)
Aromatherapy (UP, MM)

Chinese Herbs (IS, MM)

Diet (AO, AI, CD, IS, MM)

Integrated Medicine (MM)

RR Ribonuclease regulators

Ribonucleases are a family of enzymes overproduced during radiation therapy, leading to scarring & fibrosis. Substances that regulate these enzymes can help prevent this incidental damage.

Ginko biloba (RR)

ST Specialist therapies

A number of therapeutic options are part of a whole regimen, generally practised at a particular clinic.

Alstonine (AI, DR, ST)

Beljanski, Mirko (ST)
Burzynski's Antineoplastons (AI, ST)

Fuad Lechin's Method of Neuroimmunomodulation (ST)

Neuroimmunomodulation (ST)

Pao Pereira (AI, DR, ST)

Sempervirine (AI, DR, ST)
Serpentine (AI, DR, ST)

UA Unique actions

The action of some substances falls into no particular category.

UP Unknown processes

Some therapeutic option may seem to work or to have some benefit, but no one is entirely certain how.

Aromatherapy (MM, UP)

Caesium Chloride – High pH Therapy (AL, UP)
CellQuest (IS, UP)

Essiac (UP)

Homoeopathy (MM, UP)
